Heartbreaking News...

There are times when even a writer cannot find words.

But fortunately, other Tent City supporters were able to get pictures – pictures of Lakewood officials marking tents and other structures for demolition.

And the bulldozers are assembling tomorrow at 8am.

The dismantling of Tent City has begun, and my heart is breaking…will update with more info as it becomes available.

  1. How can this be? Have they found homes for everyone?

    1. Some through STEPS ,some were " abandoned", some found housing themselves. They were told it was happening. Surprising as it is, be a tenant & be told "you have to leave" as I was told. Disabled, not having enough support to survive! This mkt. Is terrible!'I know, third time I know,it's said,"my fault",try not enough to survive ,no foodstamps, alimony not increased since 2008,ssd cost increase, jerilyn Wilbert and yeah ,pmt ctr that keeps your ex's money & pays when they want no matter what the judge said, that's the state!

  2. this is an outrage...how inhumane can people be...this is their home...these people are a family...this is a disgrace and the township should be ashamed of themselves...I volunteer with numerous organization and "tent city" holds a special place in my heart...I have been going there with donations and sometimes just to visit and have met some truly beautiful people...I volunteered with CATHOLIC CHARITIES of LAKEWOOD after Hurricane Sandy and when I called during xmas looking for help for needy families I was told they are only "FOCUSING ON IMMIGRATION"...this makes me physically ill...the township of Lakewood will help all the illegal aliens who live in packs in homes/apts but cant seem to help these people...SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!!!!!

  7. Wouldn't this have been a wonderful solution to the homeless "problem" in Lakewood. Only about $5,000 each to build, to help so many people that have been simply decimated by our current economy. http://news.msn.com/us/tiny-houses-help-address-nations-homeless-problem

  8. Just to clarify all of this. The tents that were taken down were those of individuals who have moved out of Tent City and into housing through the STEPS program. None of the tents that were being lived in were touched. I agree it is extremely sad that they are trying to get rid of a good thing for many people but it is important for us to know what is really going on. Look into the STEPS program and the Census that was done last May. It will give a lot of information about what is really going on. In reality, there are many non-profit agencies working with Tent City to get them into better situations.

  9. Lakewood used to be a nice place. I hadn't seen it since I moved away ten years ago and was shocked when I came back and saw the shape of it. I'm not surprised they weren't proactive and supportive of the homeless. The soul of Lakewood has been gone for a while now.
